Lockerley Village Booklet
The Village Booklet on Lockerley explores this ancient Hampshire village, situated in the Test Valley. The village had a number of Manors and mills, and the booklet gives references to several documents in the Hampshire Archives for further exploration.
Along with a useful map showing Lockerley and its contiguous settlements, are descriptions of places of worship, past and present. Trying to unscramble the history of St John’s church is an interesting point in itself. Maybe your ancestors were part of the Temperance band established in Victorian Lockerley.
Surnames of Lockerley inhabitants are sprinkled throughout, from school master and inn keeper to landowner; and sources as diverse as Hearth Taxes, Enclosure Awards and Trade Directories are explored. Particularly interesting is that the most common surname paying Hearth Taxes in the C17th was Mersh. For anyone with family history in the area, this booklet is a mine of information.
