Holybourne Village Booklet
The Holybourne Village Booklet (VB019) explores this ancient Hampshire village near Alton.
Its early manor seems to have held an important position, being held by some of Hampshire’s most important families. The turnpike on the Winchester to London road marked an important change when it passed through the village, and in later years the railway passed close by.
Along with a useful map showing Holybourne and its contiguous settlements, are descriptions of the places of worship, past and present. Of particular interest are details on the non-conformist congregations and an American connection.
This booklet contains the surnames of over fifty Holybourne past inhabitants, from school master and inn keeper to landowner; and sources as diverse as Hearth Taxes, Enclosure Awards and Trade Directories are explored. Maybe your family were part of the local brewing industry. Whatever your connection with Holybourne, this booklet will be immensely useful.
