Colemore & Priors Dean Village Booklet
Colemore & Priors Dean are two small and relatively unpopulated parishes about 7 miles NW from Petersfield and 7 miles SW from Alton. The north-west boundary is along the route of the A32 and part of the route of the old Meon Valley railway line before it closed.
The villages are reached by a series of small roads and lanes with the main woodland along the slopes of the Hangers downs, the eastern parish boundary of Priors Dean. Many farms, big and small, are situated on chalk land to the west of the Hangers. Among the local family names appearing across the centuries are BEAL(L)E, BUDD, COMPTON, and WHITE.
This twelve page booklet includes a great deal of historical information covering Colemore/Colmer and Priorts Dean and includes not only the gentry but also the teachers and ordinary people. To assist with your research, useful references for documents and records for both parishes held at the Hampshire Record Office are given throughout, together with other sources and website addresses with more information.
