Cheriton Village Booklet
The Village Booklet on Cheriton explores this ancient village, situated in south east Hampshire, near the source of the River Itchen. The village is best known as being the site of the Battle of Cheriton, one of the most important battles in the English Civil War.
Along with a useful map showing Cheriton and its contiguous settlements, are descriptions of places of worship in the village, past and present. The number of Roman Catholics in the village is particularly interesting, reflecting no doubt the influence of the Tichborne family.
Surnames of Cheriton inhabitants are spread throughout, from school master and inn keeper to landowner, while sources as diverse as Hearth Taxes, Enclosure Awards and Trade Directories are explored. Cheriton and its contiguous parishes have a fascinating history and this booklet will provide useful information to help anyone with connections in the area.
