Amport Village Booklet (VB082) is an outstanding study of the history of this ancient Hampshire village and the parish of St Mary.
Amport is a large parish situated 4 miles south west of Andover.
Evidence suggests that the name Amport is derived from the name Anne, which first appeared in late Saxon times, and the name de PORT, from Hugh De PORT who held the Manor at the time of the Domesday book.
This twelve page booklet includes a map and is packed with historical information about the village’s large houses, the church, non-conformists, the school, inn and contiguous parishes. Many local surnames including SMITH, MELCHETT, and SWEETAPPLE, of landowners, innkeepers, farm workers and school masters and mistresses are also included.
