As part of this years Heritage Open Days festival there will be a day of Local history exhibitions & talks  held at the Ashburton Hall, Elizabeth II Court, Sussex Street, Winchester SO23 8TG on Saturday 14th September from 10:00am to 4:00pm

Free admission – cafeteria – public parking available – short walk from Winchester station

Cheryl is a contributing editor to the Southampton Records Series and the Hampshire Papers and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

Barry Shurlock

Barry is a retired medical journalist with a wide interest in local history. He writes regularly for the Hampshire Chronicle and various journals.

Erica Wheeler

Erica is a Tour Guide for Winchester and a professional Blue Badge Tour Guide for Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight.  She belongs to the Worthys Local History Group and edits its journal, Worthy History.

Roger Ottewill

Roger retired in 2008 after 35 years in higher education and in 2015 was awarded a PhD by the University of Birmingham. He has published many articles on local religious history and local politics and administration, particularly in the last two centuries.

Michael Hicks

Michael has had a distinguished career as a scholar of late medieval history and is Emeritus Professor of Medieval History at the University of Winchester.He is past Secretary of the Hampshire Field Club and Southern History Society and Local History Editor of Hampshire Studies.

Fiona Ranger

Fiona is a professional genealogist, a Trustee of the charity, Hampshire Genealogical Society, as well as its bookstall manager and liaison officer.

15:00-How the Press reported Romsey in World War II

Phoebe Merrick

Phoebe Merrick is a well-known local historian who has been studying the history of Romsey for 50 years. She is currently studying for a PhD. Amongst her many achievements is a 4-volume edition of the notes on Romsey made at the end of the 18th century by Dr John Latham (available from www.ltvas.org.uk).

15:30-The Captain Swing riots in Hampshire: why they are important and how their bicentenary is being commemorated

Edward Fennell & Bill Lucas

Bill is Professor of Learning at the University of Winchester, and chair of the English Project, and law journalist Edward, founder of the Hyde900 project, is Co-ordinator of the Bicentenary project.
